He was the epitome of the American Dream and was extremely proud and grateful to be an American and loved his adopted country deeply. With pride and passion, he enjoyed sharing his wisdom, stories and experiences. He was admired by many people for who he was as a person, and for overcoming so many challenges in his life to be able to thrive in this country. Tom had a routine of visiting the restaurant on a daily basis to have lunch and enjoy the ocean view and was visited frequently there by his family. Tom was a well-known community figure in Del Mar and led a good life surrounded by his love, Kathy Boehm, and his three children, Gerry, Tommy, and Nikki, along with 8 grandchildren and extended family. After having the egg ranch for 10 years he decided to embark into another venue and purchased the current Poseidon Restaurant and Del Mar Motel in Del Mar California in 1969, and his family still owns and operates the properties to this date. He had learned the business from his mothers’ husband, his stepfather, whom he admired greatly, and wanted to start his own ranch. Even though he had to work at an early age growing up in Greece and had to settle for only a third-grade education, he adapted to the American way of life quickly and being a natural entrepreneur, started his own business in 1958 in Lakeside, CA as the owner of an egg farm. After having a meager existence in Greece, and having gone through World War II, and then the subsequent Civil War in Greece thereafter, Tom quickly realized the huge potential and opportunities that were available in America. His mother, a widow, married an American of Greek descent in 1948, and sponsored Tom and his family to come to America, in 1954, arriving in San Diego.
Tom was an only child and was born in Greece on Januin a small village called Myrtia in the Peloponnesus region of Greece. He lived a long, colorful and epic life for over 92 years and was the longtime owner of the Poseidon Restaurant and adjacent Del Mar Motel in Del Mar, California, for over 50 years. Tom Ranglas, beloved father and grandfather, passed away in his sleep on June 12 th, 2018, in the comfort of his home.
